TYPICALAPPLICATION
Piezopositioningmaybeappliedtothefocusingofsegmented mirror systems. The composite mirror may be composedofhundredsofelements,eachrequiringfocusingundercomputercontrol.Insuchcomplexsystemsthe PA94 reduces the costs of power supplies and cooling withitsadvantagesoflowcostandlowquiescentpower consumptionwhileincreasingcircuitdensitywiththeSIP package.

GENERAL
CURRENT LIMIT
Operationalamplifiersareusuallydesignedtohaveacommonmodeinputvoltagerangethatapproximatesthe powersupplyvoltagerange.However,tokeepthecostaslowaspossibleandstillmeettherequirementsofmost applicationsthecommonmodeinputvoltagerangeofthePA94isrestricted.Theinputpinsmustalwaysbealeast 30Vfromeithersupplyvoltagebutnevermorethan450V.ThismeansthatthePA94cannotbeusedinapplications wherethesupplyvoltagesareextremelyunbalanced.Forexample,supplyvoltagesof+800Vand-100Vwouldnot beallowedinanapplicationwherethenon-invertingpinisgroundedbecauseinnormaloperationbothinputpins wouldbeat0Vandthedifferencevoltagebetweenthepositivesupplyandtheinputpinswouldbe800V.Inthis kindofapplication,however,supplyvoltages+450Vand-100Vdoesmeettheinputcommonmodevoltagerange requirementssincethemaximumdifferencevoltagebetweentheinputspinsandthesupplyvoltageis450V(the maximumallowed).Theoutputhasnosuchrestrictionsonitsvoltageswing.Theoutputcanswingwithin24Vof eithersupplyvoltageregardlessofvaluesolongasthetotalsupplyvoltagedoesnotexceed900V.

Although the PA94 can withstand differential input voltages up to 20V, additional external protection is recommended. In most applications1N4148or1N914signaldiodesaresufficient(D1,D2in Figure1a).Inmoredemandingapplicationswherelowleakageor lowcapacitanceareofconcern2N4416or2N5457-2N5459JFETs connectedasdiodeswillberequired(Q1,Q2inFigure1b).Ineithercasetheinputdifferentialvoltagewillbeclampedto.7V.This issufficientoverdrivetoproducemaximumpowerbandwidth.Note thatthisprotectiondoesnotautomaticallyprotecttheamplifierfrom excessivecommonmodeinputvoltages. Unidirectionalzenerdiodetransientsuppressorsarerecommended as protection on the supply pins. The zeners clamp transients to voltageswithinthepowersupplyratingandalsoclamppowersupply reversals to ground. Whether the zeners are used or not, the systempowersupplyshouldbeevaluatedfortransientperformance includingpower-onovershootandpower-offpolarityreversalaswell aslineregulation. Conditionswhichcancauseopencircuitsorpolarityreversalsoneitherpowersupplyrailshouldbeavoidedorprotectedagainst.Reversalsoropensonthenegativesupplyrailisknowntoinduceinputstagefailure.Unidirectional transzorbspreventthis,anditisdesirablethattheybebothelectricallyandphysicallyasclosetotheamplifieras possible.
POWERSUPPLYPROTECTION
STABILITY
ThePA94isstableatgainsof100ormorewithaNPO(COG)compensationcapacitorof2.2pF.Thecompensation capacitor,Cc,intheexternalconnectionsdiagrammustberatedat1000Vworkingvoltageandmountedcloselyto pins4and6topreventspuriousoscillation.Acompensationcapacitorlessthan2.2pFisnotrecommended. ThecompensationcapacitorCcmustberatedforthetotalsupplyvoltage.AnNPO(COG)capacitorrateda1kVis recommended. Ofequalimportancearethevoltageratingandvoltagecoefficientofthegainsettingfeedbackresistor.Typicalvoltageratingsoflowwattageresistorsare150to250V.Upto500Vcanappearacrossthefeedbackresistor.High voltageratedresistorscanbeobtained.Howevera1megohmfeedbackresistorcomposedoffive200kresistorsin serieswillproducethepropervoltagerating. TheoperatingvoltagesofthePA94arepotentiallylethal.Duringcircuitdesigndevelopafunctioningcircuitatthe lowestpossiblevoltages.Cliptestleadsshouldbeusedfor"handsoff"measurementswhiletroubleshooting.
